Announcing QualNet Developer 4.0
SNT has completed development on a new major release of QualNet version 4.0. QualNet 4.0 supports state-of-the-art multi-core processors. In order to take advantage of multi-core processors, software applications must execute by means of multiple threads. Today, very few games and not many other applications are multithreaded, BUT QUALNET IS. QualNet Developer 4.0 by default supports dual-core processors, and customers can upgrade QualNet to support any multiple of 4 processors
Two other notable additions to QualNet 4.0 include network models for broadband wireless access (IEEE 802.16, also known as WiMAX), and urban propagation models. Other new models include the military radios EPLRS and SINCGARS, OLSRv2, DYMO, OSPFv3, cellular models, pedestrian mobility, an SDF Parser, CTDB 7 and 8 terrain formats, and a new QualNet building format for terrain. Additional new features include a new QualNet 3D Visualizer for rich QT-based network animation, as well as usability and performance improvements in the 2D Java Graphical User Interface.
What do dual-core and multi-core processors buy you in terms of execution speed? Check out the graph below, which shows how QualNet 4.0 performed on 3 different platforms. All trials were faster than real-time. The simulation was a wireless scenario running 802.11b and AODV routing with 700 nodes. The simulation time was 900 s. Traffic through the network consisted of 625 CBR sessions sending 512-byte packets at 1 second intervals.
QualNet executes on shared memory architectures like those described above, but also on distributed architectures such as clusters. more on QualNet's parallel execution capability.
