SCALABLE and OPAL-RT Release New Version of EXata CPS

 Network Digital Twin Solutions for Protecting Critical Infrastructure


Culver City, CA (September 8, 2021) – SCALABLE Network Technologies, Inc. (SCALABLE), a leader in network digital twin solutions, announced today the availability of EXata for Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) 1.1, which simulates the impact of cyberattacks on electrical grids. EXata CPS leverages SCALABLE’s EXata emulation software to create digital twins of communication networks that are integrated with OPAL-RT’s real-time, multi-domain power grid simulators and other networked infrastructure. EXata CPS is integrated with the OPAL-RT hardware to offer an end-to-end, low-latency, and high-performance cyber-physical solution for the development, testing, and assessment of cyber resilience of electrical grids.

The increasing digitization of the grid has made it more vulnerable to communication network reliability issues and cybersecurity threats that may be accidental or malicious. The rapid expansion in the use of cyber exploits by state-sponsored and criminal hackers have already cost billions of dollars in damages to utilities operators and the global economy; it is simply a matter of time before such an attack turns into a potentially life-threatening emergency. Therefore, preparing for the impact of software and hardware failures under varying operating conditions is necessary to meet current and future power grid challenges.

The latest version of EXata CPS 1.1 offers an enhanced cyber model capability to help protect critical infrastructure. By modeling established and evolving techniques and components such as spear-phishing, virtual private networks (VPN), and host-based ransomware, EXata CPS 1.1 provides insight into potential attacks before they occur to better prepare and recover from such scenarios. Operators can use this unique test environment to evaluate a variety of mitigation and response strategies to analyze weaknesses, recognize breaches, and counter them more effectively.

Integration with RT-LAB

  • Extended support of additional OPAL-RT toolboxes including ARTEMiS and ePHASORSIM

Updates to support the latest OPAL-RT Operating System (OS) and hardware platforms, doubling performance and expanding system compatibility

Enhanced Hardware-in-the-Loop (HITL) capabilities through OPAL-RT real-time power simulators

Prebuilt scenarios included with latest version of EXata CPS 1.1

  • Complex cyber scenarios integrating HYPERSIM, RT-LAB and ePHASORSIM including representation of the 2015 Ukraine attack. Implements elements of all major attack components (phishing, malware propagation, remote control of HMI, and grid shutdown)

Cyber Model Library Enhancements

  • Cyber-attack editor, allows the user to design a library of historicalor zero-day attacks using a no-code paradigm. This graphical flowchart-based editor creates modular adaptive attacks and export adaptive attack scripts.
  • Attack coordination to allow users to direct distributed and adaptive network-wide attack vectors and assess the impact of vulnerabilities on key performance metrics
  • Phishing, ransomware, data-stealing attack support in the host model
  • Phishing email attack model to install bots
  • Human-in-the-loop application for receiving malicious email and triggering host model attacks
  • Remote access attacks portray results of remote access on mapped operational hosts
  • Man in the middle (MITM) attacks support cyclic redundancy check (CRC) recalculation during C37.118 modify packet (MODP) attacks
  • Adaptive scripting changes to support expanded feedback from previous attacks
  • Scenario Player can now be launched via an adaptive attack manager
  • Operational host service (OHS), which portrays one or more operational hosts as part of the SCALABLE Connection Manager. OHS simulates end-system activities and allows end-users to interact with network-wide cyber-attacks

CPU affinity for improved performance and visualization.

  • Users can now configure affinity on a thread basis.
  • Configuration can be specified via the EXata CPS and Scenario Player applications

Topology converter utilities for NA™, SolarWinds™, NMAP, and generic XML can be launched directly from EXata graphical environment.
